B I O G R A P H Y : M A T T H E W T A N
I am a Malaysian filmmaker raised in Malaysia and China, and am presently pursuing a B.A. in Film and Philosophy at New York University Abu Dhabi. Influenced largely by a third-culture upbringing, I strive to create narrative and documentary films that are human, visually affecting, and explorative of under-represented socio-cultural perspectives.
My latest documentary short film, La Lucha, made in association with the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba, offers a portrait of the Cuban struggle, as seen through the lives of two boxers in Havana. My long-term goal is to learn about and document untold stories in Southeast Asia, and to bring my region’s cultures to the international stage. I believe strongly in the power of film as a creative tool to inspire and create change for social good, and aspire to a career in both narrative and documentary storytelling.
I divide my time between New York, USA and Abu Dhabi, UAE, and am ALWAYS on the look-out for opportunities to collaborate across the world. If interested, please do not hesitate to contact me.
